Bell System

The network of companies that provided much of the United States’ telephone service under AT&T. It combined local operating companies, long-distance service, equipment manufacturing, and research.

AT&T: An American telecommunications company that grew into the Bell System’s parent and long-distance carrier. AT&T coordinated the companies and services that made the Bell System operate as one network.
Alexander Graham Bell: A Scottish-born inventor associated with the development and patenting of the telephone. His telephone patents formed the legal foundation of the original Bell enterprise.
United States v. AT&T: A federal antitrust case that led AT&T to agree to divest its local telephone companies. The case produced the settlement that dismantled the Bell System’s integrated structure.
Independent telephone companies: Telephone companies in the United States that operated outside the Bell System. They competed with Bell companies or served areas outside Bell’s local territories.
Theodore Vail: An American business executive who led AT&T and promoted a unified national telephone network. His leadership helped establish the System’s integrated, universal-service model.

Breakup of AT&T: The 1984 divestiture that separated AT&T from seven regional Bell operating companies. It ended the Bell System as a unified corporate network.
GTE: An American telecommunications company that operated telephone exchanges outside the Bell System. GTE was a major alternative provider of local telephone service.
Walter S. Gifford: An American executive who served as AT&T president from 1925 to 1948. He led AT&T through the System’s consolidation as a regulated national network.
