Beloniformes

Beloniformes is an order of ray-finned fishes that includes needlefishes, flyingfishes, halfbeaks, and sauries. Many species have elongated bodies and live near the water’s surface.

Needlefishes: Needlefishes are elongated predatory fishes with long jaws and sharp teeth. They are one of Beloniformes’ most recognizable families.
Aquatic surface respiration: Aquatic surface respiration is the use of oxygen-rich water or air near the water’s surface for breathing. Some surface-oriented fishes exploit oxygen conditions near the air–water boundary.
Flying fish: Flying fish are individual species of flyingfishes that glide above the sea after launching from the water. Their glides are studied as a specialized escape and movement behavior.
Atheriniformes: Atheriniformes is an order of ray-finned fishes that includes silversides and rainbowfishes. It is a neighboring fish order with some superficially similar slender species.
Flyingfishes: Flyingfishes are marine fishes with enlarged pectoral fins that glide above the water. Their gliding adaptations define a distinctive beloniform lineage.

Hemiramphidae: Hemiramphidae is the family of halfbeaks, fishes with an elongated lower jaw. Its family rank contrasts with Beloniformes, the broader order containing it.
Halfbeaks: Halfbeaks are surface-dwelling fishes whose lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw. Their unusual jaw shape distinguishes a major beloniform group.
Gliding flight: Gliding flight is unpowered movement through air sustained by lift and forward motion. Flyingfishes extend a water-borne leap into a sustained aerial glide.
