Ben Roy Mottelson

Ben Roy Mottelson was a Danish-American theoretical physicist who shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physics for explaining collective motion and deformation in atomic nuclei.

Atomic nucleus: The dense central region of an atom, composed of protons and neutrons. Its internal structure was the subject Mottelson helped explain.
Unified model: A nuclear-structure framework combining individual nucleon motion with collective rotations and vibrations. Mottelson developed this framework with Aage Bohr and James Rainwater.
Niels Bohr Institute: A research institute in Copenhagen founded by physicist Niels Bohr. Mottelson worked there for much of his career and developed his nuclear theory.
Liquid drop model: A model that treats the nucleus as a charged, nearly incompressible fluid drop. Unlike Mottelson’s framework, it emphasizes bulk properties rather than individual nucleon levels.
