Benedictines are members of Christian monastic communities that follow the Rule of Saint Benedict, a guide to communal prayer, work, and daily life.

Rule of Saint Benedict: A sixth-century monastic rule prescribing communal worship, work, discipline, and care for monks. It is the foundational text Benedictine communities follow.
Benedict of Nursia: A sixth-century Italian Christian monk traditionally regarded as the founder of Western monasticism. His rule and community at Monte Cassino became the tradition’s point of origin.
Benedictine schools: Schools founded or operated by Benedictine communities for religious and general education. Monasteries used teaching to form members and serve surrounding communities.
