Bengali cinema

Bengali cinema is a film tradition produced chiefly in the Bengali language, historically centered in Kolkata. It includes distinct artistic, popular, and regional strands.

Hiralal Sen: An early Indian filmmaker who made films and recorded theatrical performances in Calcutta around the turn of the twentieth century. His pioneering production work preceded the mature Bengali studio system.
Satyajit Ray: An Indian filmmaker, writer, and composer best known for the Apu Trilogy and other Bengali films. His humanist films brought global attention to Bengali cinema.
Pather Panchali: Satyajit Ray’s 1955 Bengali film about a poor rural family and the childhood of Apu. Its international acclaim established one influential image of Bengali cinema.

Hindi cinema: The film tradition produced chiefly in Hindi, centered largely in Mumbai. Its scale, language, and commercial institutions differ from Kolkata’s Bengali-language industry.
Tollygunge: A neighborhood in south Kolkata that became the center of Bengali film production. Its studios gave Bengali cinema the nickname Tollywood.
Mrinal Sen: An Indian filmmaker who made politically engaged films in Bengali and other languages. His work connected Bengali cinema to modernist form and left-wing politics.
