Bengal Renaissance

The Bengal Renaissance was a cultural and intellectual movement in Bengal from the nineteenth into the early twentieth century, associated with social reform, modern education, literature, and emerging political ideas.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy: An Indian reformer who campaigned against sati and helped establish the Brahmo Sabha, a precursor of the Brahmo Samaj. His religious and social reform work helped shape the movement’s early direction.
British East India Company: A British trading company that governed large parts of the Indian subcontinent before the British Crown took direct control. Company rule made Bengal a center of colonial administration and early institutional change.
Brahmo Samaj: A Hindu reform movement founded in Bengal that emphasized monotheism and challenged some inherited religious practices. It provided an organized setting for religious reform associated with the movement.

Permanent Settlement: A land-revenue system introduced in Bengal in 1793 that fixed zamindars’ tax obligations to the colonial state. Its restructuring of rural property and power formed part of the social setting for urban reform.
Young Bengal: A group of radical students and former students of Hindu College influenced by teacher Henry Louis Vivian Derozio. Its advocacy of reason and social criticism displayed an early, outspoken strand of reform.
Bengali nationalism: A political movement centered on Bengali identity, language, and regional interests. Cultural and literary ideas helped furnish shared symbols for political mobilization.
Bengal Muslim literary culture: The traditions of writing and intellectual life among Bengali Muslims, developed across religious, linguistic, and social settings. Its histories complicate accounts that treat the movement as representative of all Bengali communities.
