Bengalis

Bengalis are an ethnolinguistic group native to Bengal, a region spanning Bangladesh and eastern India. They are connected by the Bengali language and diverse cultural traditions shaped by the region’s history.

Bengal: A historical and cultural region of South Asia encompassing Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. The region is the homeland from which Bengali identity takes its name.
Bengal Sultanate: An independent Muslim kingdom that ruled much of Bengal from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. Its court and institutions helped establish Bengal as a distinct political and cultural region.
Rabindranath Tagore: A Bengali poet, novelist, composer, and educator who received the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature. His writing and songs became influential across Bengali communities and national borders.
Bihari people: An ethnolinguistic population associated with Bihar and neighboring regions of eastern India, with diverse languages and communities. Their distinct regional identities show why Bengal’s shared language does not define all eastern South Asians.
Bengali language: An Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. Shared language is a central bond among Bengalis across national borders.
Bengal Presidency: A major administrative unit of British India that at different times included Bengal and other eastern territories. Colonial rule reshaped the region’s administration and the public life of its Bengali population.
Kazi Nazrul Islam: A Bengali poet, musician, and anti-colonial writer known as the national poet of Bangladesh. His work joined Bengali literary culture with themes of rebellion and social equality.
Assamese people: An ethnolinguistic group associated chiefly with Assam and the Assamese language. They are a neighboring people whose language and regional history differ from those of Bengalis.
Bangladesh: A country in South Asia whose population is predominantly Bengali-speaking. Most Bengalis live in Bangladesh, where Bengali identity is closely tied to national culture.
Partition of Bengal (1905): The British division of Bengal in 1905, reversed in 1911 after widespread protest. The controversy sharpened political debate about regional identity and communal representation.
