Benizuri-e

Benizuri-e is an early multicolor ukiyo-e woodblock print, typically combining pinkish-red beni and green with black outlines. It preceded the fully polychrome nishiki-e print.

Woodblock printing in Japan: A printmaking tradition in which carved wooden blocks transfer ink or pigment onto paper. Benizuri-e used this process, with separate blocks for its colors.
Hand-colored ukiyo-e: Ukiyo-e prints whose colors were applied by hand after the image was printed. Benizuri-e replaced this labor-intensive coloring with additional color blocks.
