Benjamin Holt

Benjamin Holt (1849–1920) was an American inventor and manufacturer who developed commercially successful crawler tractors and led the Holt Manufacturing Company.

Crawler tractor: A tractor propelled by continuous tracks rather than wheels. Holt’s machines used tracks to spread weight and travel over soft soil.
Holt Manufacturing Company: An American manufacturer of agricultural and construction machinery founded by the Holt family. Benjamin Holt developed and produced his tractors through this company.
Daniel Best: An American inventor and manufacturer whose agricultural machinery company competed with Holt’s. Best’s rival tractor business later combined with Holt’s company.
Caterpillar Inc. merger: The 1925 combination of the Holt Manufacturing Company and the C. L. Best Tractor Company. The merger joined the two businesses that had grown from Holt’s and Best’s competing firms.
