Benthic organism : An organism that lives on, in, or near the bottom of a body of water. These organisms form the communities characteristic of the benthic zone.
Bioturbation : The mixing of sediment by organisms through burrowing, feeding, and movement. It redistributes particles and oxygen through benthic sediments.
Benthic ecology : The study of organisms and ecological processes in aquatic bottom habitats. It examines the communities and interactions found throughout the benthic zone.
Abyssal plain : A broad, relatively flat region of the deep-ocean floor, usually thousands of meters below sea level. It is a vast deep-sea benthic habitat with sparse food supply.
Benthic substrate : The material forming the bottom of a water body, including rock, sand, mud, and organic deposits. Substrate determines attachment sites, burrowing conditions, and habitat structure.
Biogeochemical cycle : The circulation of chemical elements through living organisms, geological materials, water, and the atmosphere. Benthic sediments store and transform elements in larger aquatic cycles.
Benthic habitat mapping : The classification and spatial mapping of aquatic bottom habitats using surveys and remote sensing. Mapping identifies the distribution of distinct benthic habitats.
Hydrothermal vent : A seafloor opening that releases geothermally heated, chemically rich water. Vent communities depend on chemosynthesis in an otherwise dark benthic setting.
Sediment-water interface : The boundary where aquatic water meets bottom sediment. Chemical exchange and animal activity make this boundary a dynamic part of the benthic zone.
Sediment diagenesis : The physical, chemical, and biological changes that sediments undergo after deposition. These changes control nutrient release and chemical conditions beneath the seabed.
