Benzalkonium chloride

Benzalkonium chloride is a mixture of alkylbenzyldimethylammonium chlorides used as a cationic surfactant, disinfectant, and preservative. Its components differ mainly in the length of their alkyl chains.

Quaternary ammonium compound: An organic compound whose nitrogen atom is bonded to four carbon groups and carries a permanent positive charge. Benzalkonium chloride is a mixture within this chemical family.
Antiseptic: A substance applied to living tissue to reduce or inhibit microorganisms. Some benzalkonium chloride products are formulated for use on skin or mucous membranes.
Chlorhexidine: A bisbiguanide antiseptic and disinfectant with activity against many bacteria and some fungi and viruses. It is a widely used alternative with different persistence and safety considerations.
Antimicrobial resistance: The ability of microorganisms to survive exposure to antimicrobial agents that would normally inhibit or kill them. Repeated exposure to benzalkonium chloride can select for reduced susceptibility in some microorganisms.
Cationic surfactant: A surface-active substance whose water-compatible head group carries a positive charge. Its charged head and hydrophobic tail let it disrupt membranes and lower surface tension.
Disinfectant: A chemical agent used on inanimate surfaces to kill or inactivate microorganisms. Benzalkonium chloride is used in some cleaners and surface-disinfection products.
Povidone-iodine: An iodine-releasing antiseptic complex used for skin and wound disinfection. Its broad antimicrobial action contrasts with benzalkonium chloride’s weaker activity against some organisms.
Bacterial efflux pump: A membrane protein system that exports substances, including toxic compounds, from a bacterial cell. Efflux can contribute to reduced susceptibility to quaternary ammonium compounds.
Bacterial cell membrane: A lipid-based barrier that controls movement of substances into and out of a bacterial cell. Benzalkonium chloride damages this barrier, causing leakage and loss of cell function.
Preservative: A substance added to a product to slow spoilage or prevent microbial growth during storage and use. It can inhibit contamination in certain medicines and personal-care products.
