Berberine

Berberine is a yellow isoquinoline alkaloid found in plants such as barberry and goldenseal. It has a long history of medicinal use and is studied for its effects on metabolism, microbes, and other biological processes.

AMP-activated protein kinase: A cellular enzyme complex that senses energy status and regulates metabolism. Berberine can influence this energy-sensing pathway, though its precise contribution to human effects remains unsettled.
Type 2 diabetes: A chronic disorder in which insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion disrupt blood glucose regulation. Trials have examined berberine as an adjunct for controlling blood glucose in this condition.
Berberis vulgaris: A thorny shrub, commonly called common barberry, whose roots and bark contain berberine. This familiar berberine-bearing species is a major source in herbal preparations.
Metformin: An oral medication used chiefly to treat type 2 diabetes by reducing glucose production in the liver. It is an established diabetes treatment often compared with berberine, but their evidence and regulatory status differ.
Randomized controlled trial: A clinical study that assigns participants randomly to interventions to compare their effects. Well-designed trials are needed to establish whether berberine improves outcomes beyond short-term laboratory measures.

Bioavailability: The fraction of an administered substance that reaches systemic circulation in an active form. Berberine’s low oral bioavailability complicates dose selection and interpretation of clinical studies.
