Bering Strait

The narrow sea passage between Alaska and Russia that connects the Bering Sea with the Chukchi Sea. It separates North America from Asia.

Bering Strait Throughflow: The northward movement of Pacific water through the Bering Strait into the Arctic Ocean. This flow carries heat, freshwater, and nutrients from the Bering Sea toward the Chukchi Sea.
Beringia: The region linking northeastern Asia and northwestern North America during periods of lower sea level. Exposed land around the strait formed the core of this Ice Age region.
Iñupiat: An Indigenous people whose homeland includes northern Alaska and parts of northwestern Canada. Iñupiat communities live along the strait’s eastern shores and use its marine resources.

Bering land bridge: The now-submerged land connection between Asia and North America exposed during low sea levels. It occupied the strait's location when Ice Age sea levels fell.
Yupik peoples: Indigenous peoples of southwestern Alaska and the Russian Far East with related languages and cultures. Yupik communities inhabit islands and coasts near both ends of the strait.
Northern Sea Route: A shipping route along Russia’s Arctic coast connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The strait is its eastern gateway to the Pacific.
Bering Strait region climate change: Climate-driven changes in temperature, sea ice, and ecosystems around the Bering Strait. Warming is altering ice conditions and the timing of marine activity there.
