Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is a loosely defined region of the western North Atlantic, roughly bounded by Bermuda, Florida, and Puerto Rico. It is associated with reports of unexplained disappearances, though evidence does not show unusual losses there.

Flight 19: A 1945 training flight of five U.S. Navy torpedo bombers that disappeared over the Atlantic near the Bahamas. Its loss became the Triangle’s best-known aviation mystery.
Gulf Stream: A strong, warm Atlantic ocean current that flows northward along the eastern coast of North America. It can rapidly carry wreckage away from reported disappearance sites.
Vincent Gaddis: An American writer who popularized the phrase “Bermuda Triangle” in a 1964 magazine article. His article gave the region its enduring name.
Bermuda Triangle conspiracy theories: Claims that hidden forces or deliberate concealment explain disappearances attributed to the Bermuda Triangle. These accounts go beyond the region’s basic mystery narrative.
USS Cyclops: A U.S. Navy collier that vanished with 309 people aboard in the western Atlantic in 1918. Its disappearance predates the Triangle’s popular mythology but is often included in it.
Tropical cyclone: A rotating storm system that forms over warm tropical or subtropical waters. Storms can create dangerous conditions along routes crossing the region.
Edward Van Winkle Jones: An Associated Press journalist whose 1950 article described mysterious disappearances in the western Atlantic. His reporting helped establish the cluster of incidents later called the Triangle.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration: A U.S. federal agency that monitors oceans, weather, and the atmosphere. The agency notes that reported Triangle losses do not establish an unusually hazardous region.
Star Tiger: A British South American Airways passenger aircraft that disappeared over the Atlantic in 1948. Its unexplained loss helped build the region’s aviation-mystery reputation.
Rogue wave: An unusually large and steep ocean wave that can arise amid otherwise smaller waves. Sudden extreme seas are one proposed natural hazard for ships.
