Bernard Bosanquet

Bernard Bosanquet (1848–1923) was an English philosopher and political theorist, and a leading British idealist. His work linked metaphysics and ethics to a theory of the state and social life.

British idealism: A nineteenth- and early twentieth-century British philosophical movement influenced by German idealism. Bosanquet was one of its leading figures and adapted its metaphysics to ethics and politics.
The Philosophical Theory of the State: Bosanquet’s 1899 book arguing that the state embodies a community’s ethical life and common good. It presents his central political argument in its fullest systematic form.
John Locke: An English philosopher whose political theory grounds government in natural rights and the consent of individuals. Locke’s emphasis on pre-political individual rights contrasts with Bosanquet’s socially formed account of freedom.
Charity Organisation Society: A British voluntary organization founded in 1869 to coordinate charitable relief and investigate poverty. Bosanquet participated in this movement, connecting his social thought with debates over organized charity.
Absolute idealism: The view that reality forms a unified whole, rather than a collection of ultimately independent things. Its holistic account of reality underpins Bosanquet’s account of persons and political community.
Positive freedom: Freedom understood as the effective capacity to act on rational purposes, not merely the absence of restraint. Bosanquet uses this idea to explain why law can enable, rather than simply restrict, freedom.
John Stuart Mill: A British philosopher and political economist who defended individual liberty and representative government. Mill’s liberal account of liberty is a major foil to Bosanquet’s positive conception of freedom.
Poor Law: British legislation and institutions that provided relief to people in poverty, especially through local authorities and workhouses. His arguments about poverty and state assistance entered disputes over reforming poor relief.
Hegelianism: A philosophical tradition shaped by G. W. F. Hegel’s account of reason, history, and social institutions. Bosanquet drew on Hegel’s account of ethical life while developing his own idealist system.
General will: A political conception of the common will expressed through a community’s institutions and laws. Bosanquet interprets the state as an organized expression of a community’s general will.
