Bernard Leach

Bernard Leach (1887–1979) was a British studio potter and writer who helped establish studio pottery as an international movement by blending East Asian and European traditions.

Shōji Hamada: Shōji Hamada was a Japanese potter and a leading figure in the mingei movement. Hamada shared Leach’s pottery in St Ives and became his closest artistic collaborator.
Studio pottery: Studio pottery is ceramic work made in small-scale workshops by potters who control design and production. Leach became one of the movement’s defining advocates and exemplars.

Tokyo University of the Arts: Tokyo University of the Arts is Japan’s national university for fine arts and music. Leach studied etching there after moving to Japan as a young adult.
Craft revival: The craft revival is a broad movement renewing respect for handmade work and traditional making. Leach gave this movement a prominent ceramic model grounded in daily use.
Wedgwood: Wedgwood is a British ceramics manufacturer founded by Josiah Wedgwood in the eighteenth century. Its industrial production represents the factory system Leach often set against handcraft.
