Bernardo Houssay

Bernardo Houssay (1887–1971) was an Argentine physiologist whose experiments established that pituitary hormones influence glucose metabolism. He shared the 1947 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Pituitary gland: An endocrine gland at the base of the brain that releases hormones regulating growth, reproduction, and other glands. Removing it in animals lowered blood glucose and altered diabetes, revealing its metabolic influence.
University of Buenos Aires: A public research university founded in Buenos Aires in 1821. Houssay studied medicine and built much of his research career there.
Luis Federico Leloir: An Argentine biochemist who won the 1970 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for research on sugar nucleotides. Leloir trained in Houssay’s institute before becoming a leading independent scientist.
