Berry

A berry is a fleshy fruit formed from one flower’s ovary, usually containing one or more seeds. In botanical usage, berries include tomatoes and grapes, but not strawberries.

Fruit: A mature flowering-plant ovary, sometimes with associated tissues, that contains seeds. Berry is one specific kind of fruit defined by its structure and development.
Aggregate fruit: A fruit formed from multiple separate ovaries of one flower. A berry develops from one ovary, unlike an aggregate fruit such as a raspberry.
Tomato: The edible fruit of Solanum lycopersicum, a plant in the nightshade family. A tomato is a familiar example of a botanical berry.
Pollination: The transfer of pollen to a flower’s receptive surface, enabling fertilization in many plants. Pollination can initiate the reproductive sequence that leads to berry development.
Theophrastus: An ancient Greek philosopher whose surviving works include systematic studies of plants. His botanical writings are among the earliest foundations of plant description and classification.
Ovary (botany): The seed-bearing part of a flower that develops into fruit after fertilization. A berry develops from the ovary of a single flower.
Multiple fruit: A fruit formed from the ovaries of multiple flowers in an inflorescence. A berry comes from one flower rather than a cluster of flowers.
Grape: A small, sweet fruit of a woody vine in the genus Vitis. Grapes fit the botanical definition of berries.
Fertilization in plants: The fusion of male and female gametes in plants, producing a zygote. After fertilization, the ovary can develop into a berry containing seeds.
John Ray: An English naturalist who developed influential systems for classifying plants in the seventeenth century. His plant classifications helped shape the systematic study of fruit forms.
