Bessemer process

An industrial method for producing steel by blowing air through molten pig iron in a converter. Oxidation removes impurities and lowers the iron’s carbon content.

Bessemer converter: A tilting vessel in which air is blown through molten pig iron to refine it into steel. Its bottom tuyeres force air through the bath, enabling rapid oxidation.
Henry Bessemer: An English engineer and inventor who developed and patented a practical converter steelmaking process. His 1850s invention gave the process its name and industrial form.
Railway track: The rails, sleepers, and supporting structures that guide railway vehicles. Bessemer steel supplied stronger, longer-lasting rails for expanding rail networks.
Steel industry: The sector that produces steel from iron ore, scrap, and other inputs. The converter helped shift steelmaking toward large-scale industrial production.
Open-hearth furnace: A regenerative furnace used to make steel by heating a shallow bath of iron and scrap. Its longer refining time enabled greater control over steel composition.
Pig iron: A high-carbon iron produced by smelting iron ore in a blast furnace. It is the molten feedstock whose carbon and impurities the process removes.
William Kelly: An American ironmaster who developed an air-blowing steelmaking method independently of Bessemer. His earlier experiments show that the underlying idea arose independently.
Brooklyn Bridge: A suspension bridge spanning the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn, opened in 1883. Its steel-wire cables exemplify the era’s growing use of mass-produced steel.
Railway mania: A period of intense railway investment and speculation, especially in Britain during the 1840s. Cheaper steel later supported railway expansion on a scale iron had constrained.
Basic oxygen steelmaking: A modern steelmaking process that blows high-purity oxygen onto molten iron in a basic-lined converter. It retains converter refining while replacing air with oxygen and improving control.
