Betel nut chewing

Betel nut chewing is the oral use of areca nut, often wrapped in betel leaf with slaked lime and other ingredients. It produces stimulant effects and serves social or ceremonial roles in many communities.

Arecoline: Arecoline is the principal psychoactive alkaloid in areca nut and acts on muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. This alkaloid drives much of the stimulant effect associated with chewing.
