Bezold effect

The Bezold effect is a visual color-assimilation effect in which small colored elements appear to shift toward the color of their surroundings. It is commonly demonstrated with patterns of interleaved colors.

Color assimilation: A perceptual effect in which a color appears more like nearby colors. The Bezold effect is a pattern-dependent form of color assimilation.
Wilhelm von Bezold: A nineteenth-century German textile designer and color theorist associated with the Bezold effect. His name became attached to the pattern-based color change.
