Bhāskara I

Bhāskara I was a seventh-century Indian mathematician and astronomer. His works preserved and explained Aryabhata’s mathematics, and his sine approximation was unusually accurate.

Aryabhata: Aryabhata was an Indian mathematician and astronomer whose influential work Āryabhaṭīya treated mathematics and astronomy. Bhāskara’s commentaries explain and defend Aryabhata’s mathematical and astronomical system.
Bhāskara I’s sine approximation: Bhāskara I’s sine approximation is a rational formula for estimating sine values across a quadrant. This is his best-known mathematical result, giving practical sine values without modern analytic methods.

Lalla: Lalla was an eighth-century Indian astronomer known for the treatise Śiṣyadhīvṛddhida. His later astronomical writing illustrates the scholarly tradition that followed Bhāskara.
Commentary: A commentary is an explanatory work that interprets, clarifies, or expands an earlier text. Bhāskara’s commentary made Aryabhata’s terse rules accessible through explanation and worked procedures.
