Bicycle brake

A bicycle brake slows or stops a wheel by applying friction or another braking force. Its design balances stopping power, control, heat management, and compatibility with the wheel.

Rim brake: A bicycle brake that slows a wheel by pressing pads against its rim. It applies braking force directly at the wheel’s rim.
Brake pad: A replaceable friction component that presses against a braking surface to slow motion. It is the replaceable contact material in many bicycle brakes.
Bicycle wheel locking: The condition in which a braked bicycle wheel stops rotating while the bicycle continues moving. Excess braking force can exceed tire grip and lock a wheel.
Coaster brake: A bicycle hub brake activated by pedaling backward. It is operated through the pedals rather than a hand lever.
Disc brake: A brake that slows a wheel by squeezing a rotor attached to its hub. Its rotor separates the braking surface from the rim.
Brake rotor: A rotating disc that provides the friction surface for a disc brake. Disc brakes squeeze this wheel-mounted surface to create torque.
Brake fade: A reduction in braking effectiveness caused by heat or other operating conditions. Sustained braking can heat components and reduce stopping force.
Regenerative braking: A braking method that converts motion into stored electrical energy. It recovers energy instead of dissipating all braking energy as heat.
Drum brake: A brake that slows a wheel when internal shoes press against a rotating drum. It encloses the friction surfaces inside the hub or wheel.
Bicycle rim: The outer circular part of a wheel that supports the tire and may provide a braking surface. Rim brakes use its sidewall as their friction surface.
