Bikini

A two-piece swimsuit that typically leaves the midriff exposed. Its name was introduced in 1946 by French designer Louis Réard, after Bikini Atoll.

Louis Réard: A French automobile engineer and clothing designer who introduced the bikini in 1946. He named and promoted the swimsuit that became known as the bikini.
Swimsuit: A garment designed for swimming or other water activities. The bikini is one style within the broader category of swimwear.
Modesty: A social and personal standard governing the display of the body. Debates over the bikini often turn on which bodily exposure counts as modest.
Sports bikini: A bikini designed for athletic activity, often with secure support and movement-oriented construction. Sport-specific versions address the support and coverage needs a leisure bikini may not meet.
Jacques Heim: A French fashion designer who introduced a two-piece swimsuit called the Atome in 1946. His competing design appeared shortly before Réard's bikini.

Microkini: An extremely minimal bikini with very small areas of fabric. It pushes the bikini's minimal-coverage design to an extreme.
Bikini Atoll: An atoll in the Marshall Islands used for U.S. nuclear weapons tests from 1946 to 1958. Réard named the swimsuit after the atoll during the first postwar nuclear tests.
Triangle bikini: A bikini style with two triangular fabric panels covering the breasts, often tied at the neck and back. Its minimal top is among the most recognizable bikini designs.
