Bill Russell

Bill Russell was an American basketball player and coach who led the Boston Celtics to 11 NBA championships and became a prominent civil rights advocate.

1956 NBA draft: The annual selection of eligible players by NBA teams, held in 1956 before the league season. Russell was selected by the St. Louis Hawks and traded to Boston before his NBA career began.
