Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday (1915–1959) was an American jazz singer whose distinctive phrasing and emotional interpretations shaped vocal jazz. Her best-known recordings include “Strange Fruit” and “God Bless the Child.”

Strange Fruit: A 1939 song about the lynching of Black Americans, made famous by Billie Holiday’s recording. Her stark performance turned its anti-lynching lyrics into one of her defining works.
Jazz singing: A vocal practice that uses jazz rhythm, phrasing, improvisation, and interaction with instrumentalists. Holiday adapted instrumental jazz approaches to the phrasing and timing of a singer.
