Binalud Mountains

The Binalud Mountains are a range in northeastern Iran between Mashhad and Nishapur, forming part of the region’s highland landscape.

Mashhad: Mashhad is a major city in northeastern Iran and the capital of Razavi Khorasan province. The range lies southwest of Mashhad, whose location anchors its northeastern side.
Alborz: The Alborz is a mountain range in northern Iran along the southern shore of the Caspian Sea. Like Binalud, it is an Iranian range shaped by continental convergence, though in a different tectonic setting.
Nishapur Plain: The Nishapur Plain is an agricultural basin in Razavi Khorasan Province, west of Mashhad. Runoff from the Binalud foothills helps sustain this settled and cultivated plain.
Mount Binalud: Mount Binalud is the highest peak of the Binalud Mountains in northeastern Iran. This summit gives the mountain range its name and marks its highest point.
Nishapur: Nishapur is a historic city in northeastern Iran, west of Mashhad. Nishapur lies along the range’s western approach and gives its geographic span a familiar endpoint.
Arabian Plate: The Arabian Plate is a tectonic plate moving northward toward the Eurasian Plate. Its convergence with Eurasia contributes to the mountain-building forces affecting northeastern Iran.
Qanats of Iran: Qanats are underground channels that carry groundwater from uplands to settlements and fields. Mountain-fed groundwater has supported traditional irrigation in the dry country around the range.
Shirbad: Shirbad is a prominent high peak in the Binalud Mountains of northeastern Iran. It is another defining summit of the range and a focus for local mountaineering.
Razavi Khorasan Province: Razavi Khorasan is a province in northeastern Iran, with Mashhad as its capital. The Binalud range occupies the province’s central highlands.
Eurasian Plate: The Eurasian Plate is a large tectonic plate underlying much of Europe and Asia. The Binalud region lies near the active collision zone where the Arabian and Eurasian plates converge.
