Binary opposition

A pair of contrasting concepts treated as fundamental to a system of meaning. The opposition helps organize how that system distinguishes and relates ideas.

Structuralism: An approach that explains cultural phenomena through underlying systems of relations and differences. Binary oppositions are a basic tool for analyzing meaning as a system of differences.
Ferdinand de Saussure: A Swiss linguist whose theory of language treated signs as elements defined by relations within a system. His account of relational meaning helped establish the framework for structural analysis.
Myth analysis: The study of myths' structures, symbols, narratives, and cultural functions. Analysts have used oppositions to track how myths transform conflicts such as nature and culture.
Continuum: A connected range of values or states with no sharp division between its points. A continuum challenges the assumption that a domain divides naturally into two opposing categories.
Signifier and signified: The two sides of a linguistic sign: its perceptible form and the concept it evokes. Their relation illustrates how meaning depends on distinctions rather than isolated terms.
Claude Lévi-Strauss: A French anthropologist who analyzed myths and kinship through recurring structures and transformations. He used paired contrasts to explain patterns shared across myths and cultures.
Narratology: The study of narrative structure, form, and the ways stories represent events. Contrasting roles and values can organize a story's narrative world.
Gradient: A gradual change in a property across a range rather than a division into discrete classes. Gradients offer an alternative to treating a contrast as an either-or distinction.
Markedness: The asymmetry by which one member of a contrast is treated as ordinary and the other as distinctive. Many oppositions assign one term a default status and make its counterpart seem exceptional.
Roman Jakobson: A linguist who studied the structures of language, including distinctive features organized in oppositions. His phonological work showed how contrasts can distinguish sounds within a language.
