Binoculars

Binoculars are handheld optical instruments with two parallel telescopes that let both eyes view a magnified distant scene. They combine magnification with a natural, three-dimensional view.

Objective lens: The front lens of an optical instrument that gathers light from the observed scene. Its diameter determines how much light each telescope gathers.
Magnification: The ratio between an image's apparent size through an optical system and its unaided apparent size. It states how much larger distant objects appear through the binoculars.
Birdwatching: The observation and identification of wild birds in their natural environments. Compact binoculars help locate and identify birds without approaching them.
Telescope: An optical instrument that collects and magnifies light from distant objects. Binoculars adapt the telescope's magnifying optics into paired channels.
Spotting scope: A compact, high-magnification telescope used for terrestrial observation, usually with one eyepiece. It offers greater magnification than typical binoculars but requires viewing with one eye.
Eyepiece: A lens or lens group nearest the eye that magnifies the image formed by an objective. It magnifies the intermediate image produced inside each telescope.
Exit pupil: The small image of an objective aperture formed by an eyepiece, positioned where the eye receives light. Its diameter helps determine how bright the view appears in dim conditions.
Astronomical binoculars: Binoculars designed for observing celestial objects, often with large objectives and high light gathering. Large apertures reveal star fields and bright extended objects.
Galileo Galilei: An Italian astronomer and physicist who improved the refracting telescope and used it for astronomical observations. His telescope design established an early approach to compact terrestrial viewing.
Opera glasses: Low-magnification binoculars designed for viewing performances from an audience seat. They favor a wide, bright view at short distances over detailed long-range observation.
