Knowra Biomimetics Biomimetics Biomimetics applies structures, processes, and principles found in living organisms to human design and engineering problems. It draws on biological examples without requiring exact copies of organisms.
Bio-inspired design : A design process that draws ideas from biological systems without necessarily reproducing them. It describes the translation from biological observation to engineered solution.
Sharkskin-inspired surfaces : Engineered surfaces modeled on shark skin’s riblet texture to reduce drag or inhibit microbial attachment. Shark skin has inspired surface designs for fluid flow and hygiene.
Leonardo da Vinci : An Italian Renaissance artist, engineer, and scientist known for studies of anatomy, flight, machines, and nature. His bird-inspired flying-machine sketches exemplify early attempts to learn from organisms.
Bioengineering : The application of engineering principles to biology, medicine, and biological systems. Bioengineering often modifies or builds with living systems, unlike biomimetics’ transfer of biological ideas.
Structural coloration : Color produced by microscopic structures that scatter or interfere with light rather than by pigments alone. Photonic structures in organisms inspire biomimetic color and optical materials.
Velcro : A reusable fastening system whose hooks and loops were inspired by burrs adhering to fabric and animal fur. It is a familiar product originating from observation of a biological attachment mechanism.
Otto Schmitt : An American biophysicist who developed electronic devices inspired by biological systems. He helped establish biomimetics as a named approach to engineering.
Synthetic biology : The design and construction of new biological parts, devices, and systems or the redesign of existing ones. It engineers biology itself rather than using biological principles to design nonbiological solutions.
Gecko adhesion : The dry attachment of gecko feet, produced by microscopic hairs interacting with surfaces through intermolecular forces. Its reversible grip has inspired adhesives that work without conventional glue.
Bullet train : A high-speed passenger train designed for rapid, efficient travel on dedicated rail lines. The Shinkansen’s nose shape was redesigned using the kingfisher’s beak as inspiration to reduce tunnel noise.
