Biosphere reserve

A UNESCO designation for places that link biodiversity conservation with sustainable development, research, and education. Each reserve uses zonation to combine protected areas with surrounding communities and landscapes.

Man and the Biosphere Programme: A UNESCO intergovernmental programme that promotes research and cooperation on people’s relationship with the environment. It establishes the international programme that designates and supports biosphere reserves.
Biosphere reserve zoning: The division of a biosphere reserve into core, buffer, and transition areas with different functions. Zoning translates the reserve’s combined conservation and development aims into spatial arrangements.
Ecological research: The scientific study of relationships among organisms and their environments. Reserves provide settings for studying ecosystems and long-term environmental change.
National park: A legally protected area established by a state to conserve natural or cultural features. Unlike a biosphere reserve, a national park is a national designation and need not combine conservation with sustainable development across zones.
Core area: The most strictly protected zone of a biosphere reserve, devoted to conserving ecosystems and species. This zone anchors conservation within the wider reserve.
UNESCO designation: Recognition granted by UNESCO to sites that meet criteria established by a UNESCO programme or convention. The designation places qualifying areas in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
Environmental monitoring: The repeated collection and analysis of data about environmental conditions over time. Monitoring tracks ecological change and helps assess management outcomes.
World Heritage Site: A place recognized under the UNESCO World Heritage Convention for outstanding universal value. World Heritage recognition centers on exceptional cultural or natural value, not the biosphere reserve’s integrated development model.
Buffer zone: An area surrounding or adjoining a protected core where compatible activities support conservation and research. It reduces pressure on the core while allowing activities consistent with its protection.
World Network of Biosphere Reserves: An international network of sites designated under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme. It connects individual reserves for cooperation, research, and exchange of experience.
