Birefringence

Birefringence is the dependence of a material’s refractive index on light’s polarization or direction of travel. It can split light into waves that propagate at different speeds and polarizations.

Refractive index: A dimensionless measure of how much light slows in a medium relative to vacuum. Birefringence is the difference between refractive indices experienced by different light modes.
Polarization: The orientation and evolution of the electric-field oscillation in an electromagnetic wave. Different polarization states can experience different refractive indices in birefringent media.
Calcite: A calcium carbonate mineral known for strong birefringence and double refraction. A printed image viewed through calcite can appear as two displaced images.
Polarizing microscope: A microscope that uses polarized light to examine materials with direction-dependent optical properties. Birefringence makes many crystals and fibers visible through changes in transmitted polarization.
Optical activity: The rotation of a linearly polarized wave’s polarization direction as it travels through a medium. It rotates polarization through circular-mode phase differences rather than directional refractive-index splitting.
Optical anisotropy: Dependence of a material’s optical properties on direction. Directional variation in optical response produces birefringence in anisotropic materials.
Anisotropic crystal: A crystal whose physical properties vary with direction because of its internal structure. Its directional symmetry allows light propagation to depend on direction and polarization.
Wollaston prism: An optical device made from birefringent prisms that separates light into two orthogonally polarized beams. It converts a crystal’s polarization-dependent refraction into a measurable beam separation.
Optical coherence tomography: An imaging technique that reconstructs tissue structure from the depth-dependent reflection of low-coherence light. Polarization-sensitive versions use birefringence to map tissue organization.
Dichroism: Unequal absorption of light for different polarization directions in a material. It changes transmitted intensity by polarization, whereas birefringence primarily changes phase velocity.
