Knowra Birju Maharaj Birju Maharaj Birju Maharaj (1938–2022) was an Indian Kathak dancer, choreographer, musician, and teacher who shaped the tradition through performance, teaching, and choreography.
Acchan Maharaj : A Kathak dancer and teacher in the Lucknow gharana, and Birju Maharaj’s father and guru. His father trained him in the family tradition that formed his artistic foundation.
Kathak : A North Indian classical dance tradition combining rhythmic footwork, spins, gesture, and narrative expression. It is the tradition Maharaj performed, taught, and helped renew.
