Bishops' Wars

The Bishops' Wars were two conflicts between Scotland and England in 1639 and 1640, triggered by Charles I's attempts to impose episcopacy and a new prayer book on the Scottish church.

National Covenant: A 1638 Scottish pledge opposing religious innovations and defending the Reformed church. Its signatories organized resistance to Charles I's religious policies before the first war.
Charles I of England: King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1625 until his execution in 1649. His religious policies and efforts to rule without Parliament precipitated the wars.
Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven: A Scottish soldier and Covenanter commander who led forces during the Bishops' Wars. His experienced leadership helped make the Scottish army effective against royal forces.
Long Parliament: The English Parliament summoned in November 1640 that remained in session, with interruptions, until 1660. Its convening followed the king's defeat and the financial demands of the Scottish occupation.

William Laud: Archbishop of Canterbury from 1633 to 1645, associated with reforms that promoted ceremonial worship. Laud helped shape the prayer book and church policies that provoked Scottish opposition.
Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford: An English statesman and Charles I's chief adviser on Irish and northern affairs before 1641. Strafford urged a stronger military response but could not secure adequate English resources.

First Bishops' War: The 1639 confrontation between Charles I and the Scottish Covenanters, ending without a decisive battle. It showed the king could not enforce his religious program by mobilizing an unprepared army.
James VI and I: The first monarch to rule both England and Scotland, reigning from 1603 to 1625. His pursuit of greater royal control over the Scottish church shaped the policies Charles continued.
