Bite force

Bite force is the force an animal’s jaws exert on an object or prey during closure. It depends on jaw-muscle strength, skull structure, and the bite’s position along the jaws.

Jaw biomechanics: The study of forces and motion in the jaws during feeding and other activities. It explains how muscles, bones, and bite position combine to produce bite force.
Feeding ecology: The study of how animals obtain and consume food in relation to their environments. Bite force helps connect an animal’s anatomy to the foods it can exploit.
Saltwater crocodile: A large crocodilian native to coastal and freshwater habitats from South Asia to northern Australia. Its exceptionally strong bite has been measured directly in living animals.
Bite pressure: Force applied per unit area at a biting contact surface. A sharp tooth can create high pressure without the greatest total bite force.
Jaw adductor muscles: Muscles that close the jaws by drawing the mandible toward the skull. Their size, arrangement, and activation directly affect the force generated during a bite.
Diet: The kinds of food regularly eaten by an organism. Food hardness and toughness can favor different levels and patterns of bite force.
Hippopotamus: A large semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. Its massive jaws and enlarged canines make it a notable example of powerful biting.
Bite speed: The rate at which an animal closes its jaws or brings its teeth together. Fast closure and high force are distinct performance traits.
Mechanical advantage: The ratio between an input force and the output force produced by a mechanical system. Jaw geometry can amplify muscle force, trading bite speed or range for force.
Predation: An interaction in which one organism captures and consumes another. A predator’s bite can restrain prey, cause injury, or puncture protective tissues.
