Bithynia

Bithynia was a historical region of northwestern Anatolia, between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. It became a kingdom and later a Roman province.

Bithynians: The ancient people who inhabited Bithynia and gave the region its name. Their settlement of the region preceded its emergence as a Hellenistic kingdom.
Sea of Marmara: An inland sea connecting the Aegean Sea with the Black Sea through the Turkish Straits. Its southern shore formed Bithynia’s maritime edge and linked the region to the Bosporus.
Prusias I of Bithynia: A Bithynian king who ruled in the third and early second centuries BCE. His campaigns and diplomacy expanded the kingdom’s influence in northwestern Anatolia.
Roman Republic: The period of Roman government before the establishment of the Roman Empire. The republic annexed Bithynia and incorporated it into Roman provincial rule.
Zipoetes I: A ruler who established an independent Bithynian kingdom in the early third century BCE. His rule marks the kingdom’s emergence from the Successor-era politics of Anatolia.
Bosporus: The narrow strait connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. Control of this passage gave Bithynia strategic importance between Anatolia and Europe.
Prusias II of Bithynia: A Bithynian king who ruled during the mid-second century BCE. His conflict with Rome and Pergamon exposed the kingdom’s dependence on regional power politics.
Roman Empire: The state ruled by Roman emperors from 27 BCE until the empire’s western collapse. Imperial government made Bithynia a lasting administrative and urban center.
Nicomedes I: A Bithynian king who founded Nicomedia and strengthened the kingdom in the third century BCE. His foundation became one of Bithynia’s leading cities and a major regional capital.
Black Sea: An inland sea bordered by southeastern Europe and western Asia. Bithynia’s northern coastline connected its ports to Black Sea routes.
