Black-and-white cinematography

Black-and-white cinematography records or presents moving images through tonal differences rather than color. It uses lighting, exposure, contrast, and composition to shape visual meaning.

Luminance: The intensity of light emitted or reflected from a surface in a given direction. Monochrome images encode brightness differences without hue.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: A 1920 German Expressionist silent film directed by Robert Wiene. Its stark monochrome photography intensifies distorted sets and psychological unease.
Silent film: Cinema produced before synchronized recorded dialogue became standard. Black-and-white images defined much of cinema’s silent-era visual language.

Exposure (photography): The amount of light that reaches a photosensitive medium during image capture. Exposure determines which monochrome tones retain detail or become shadow and highlight.
Bicycle Thieves: A 1948 Italian neorealist film directed by Vittorio De Sica. Its monochrome street photography grounds the story in postwar Rome.
