Black Consciousness Movement

A South African anti-apartheid movement that urged Black people to reject imposed inferiority and build political self-reliance through psychological liberation and collective action.

Steve Biko: A South African anti-apartheid activist who became the leading intellectual and organizer of Black Consciousness. His writings and organizing gave the movement its clearest political voice.
Black theology: A theological approach that interprets Christian faith through the experiences and liberation struggles of Black people. It supplied religious language for rejecting apartheid’s racial hierarchy.
Soweto uprising: A 1976 student revolt in Soweto against mandatory Afrikaans instruction, followed by nationwide protests and state violence. Black Consciousness ideas influenced student resistance, though the uprising had multiple causes.
Nonracialism: A political principle that seeks to overcome racial hierarchy without making racial identity the basis of political organization. Black Consciousness challenged approaches that treated multiracial cooperation as sufficient without Black leadership.
Apartheid: A system of racial segregation and white-minority rule imposed in South Africa from 1948 to 1994. The movement arose against the political and psychological structures apartheid enforced.
Black Community Programmes: A network of South African development projects established by Black Consciousness activists in the early 1970s. Community projects turned self-reliance into practical work in health, education, and employment.
Bantu Education: An apartheid-era system of schooling designed to prepare Black South Africans for subordinate roles in society. Student opposition to this system gave Black Consciousness ideas a mass audience.
African nationalism: A political movement seeking African self-determination, unity, and freedom from colonial or foreign rule. Black Consciousness drew on African self-assertion while addressing South Africa’s specific racial order.
University Christian Movement: A multiracial South African student organization formed in 1967, which helped create space for Black student organizing. Black students developed independent political organizing within and around this organization.
Black People's Convention: A South African political organization founded in 1972 to coordinate Black Consciousness groups and broaden their political activity. The convention carried the movement beyond student organizing into wider political coordination.
