Black Hawk War

The Black Hawk War was an 1832 conflict in the upper Midwest between Sauk and Fox forces led by Black Hawk and the United States, assisted by Native American allies.

Treaty of St. Louis (1804): An 1804 treaty in which Sauk and Meskwaki representatives ceded extensive lands to the United States. The United States cited this disputed treaty to demand Sauk removal from Illinois.
Black Hawk's War (1832 campaign): The sequence of military operations in Illinois and Wisconsin during the 1832 Black Hawk War. It traces the war's movements beyond its underlying land dispute.
Abraham Lincoln in the Black Hawk War: Abraham Lincoln's brief 1832 service as a captain in an Illinois militia company. His later prominence made this minor episode a lasting part of the war's popular history.
