Black hole thermodynamics

Black hole thermodynamics relates the geometry and mechanics of black holes to temperature, entropy, and thermodynamic laws. It connects gravitational horizons with quantum fields and statistical physics.

Bekenstein–Hawking entropy: The entropy assigned to a black hole, proportional to its event-horizon area in Planck units. It identifies horizon area, rather than volume, as the black hole’s thermodynamic entropy.
Event horizon: A boundary in spacetime beyond which events cannot send signals to distant observers. Its area enters the entropy formula, and its causal boundary underlies Hawking radiation.
Jacob Bekenstein: Theoretical physicist who proposed that black holes possess entropy proportional to horizon area. His proposal turned the area law from a formal analogy into a physical claim.
Black hole information paradox: The conflict between Hawking radiation’s apparent information loss and quantum theory’s preservation of information. Thermal evaporation raises the question of how information encoded in collapsing matter can survive.
Hawking radiation: Thermal radiation predicted to emerge from quantum fields near a black hole’s event horizon. Its temperature gives black holes a physical thermal interpretation.
Surface gravity: A measure of the gravitational acceleration associated with a black hole horizon, defined with care for relativistic observers. It sets the black hole temperature through the surface-gravity relation.
Stephen Hawking: Theoretical physicist whose work predicted thermal radiation from black holes using quantum field theory in curved spacetime. His radiation calculation supplied the temperature needed to complete the thermodynamic picture.
Black hole entropy: The entropy attributed to a black hole, commonly expressed as a quarter of its horizon area in Planck units. Its enormous area-scaled value motivates microscopic accounts of gravitational degrees of freedom.
Black hole temperature: The temperature associated with a black hole, proportional to its surface gravity and inversely related to its mass for a Schwarzschild black hole. It is the thermal quantity paired with black hole entropy in the first law.
Planck units: A system of natural units built from fundamental constants, including the Planck length and Planck area. The entropy-area law measures horizon area in Planck units.
