Black Legend

The Black Legend is a tradition of accounts portraying Spain and its empire as exceptionally cruel, intolerant, and oppressive. The term also describes disputes over how those accounts were shaped and used.

Bartolomé de las Casas: A sixteenth-century Dominican friar whose writings condemned Spanish abuses against Indigenous peoples in the Americas. His vivid denunciations became central evidence in later anti-Spanish portrayals.

Anti-Catholicism: Hostility or prejudice directed at Catholic beliefs, institutions, or people. Protestant polemics often fused criticism of Spanish power with attacks on Catholicism.
Spanish nationalism: Political movements and ideas asserting a shared Spanish nation, identity, or sovereignty. Defenses against the legend have sometimes made it a touchstone of national identity.
Spanish conquest of the Americas: The military and political expansion of Spanish rule across the Americas beginning in the late fifteenth century. Accounts of conquest and colonial violence supplied much of the legend’s subject matter.
Apology of William of Orange: A 1581 political defense of Dutch resistance that accused Philip II of tyranny and religious persecution. It recast Spanish rule as a threat to liberty and conscience.
Spanish colonization of the Americas: The establishment and governance of Spanish settlements and institutions in the Americas. Its varied record complicates depictions of colonial rule as uniformly cruel or benevolent.
Hispanism: Intellectual and cultural movements emphasizing historical or cultural ties among Spain and Spanish-speaking societies. Some Hispanist accounts challenged hostile portrayals by emphasizing shared heritage.
Dutch Revolt: A sixteenth- and seventeenth-century revolt against Habsburg rule that established an independent Dutch Republic. Rebel writers used stories of Spanish repression to justify resistance.
Spanish Armada: The Spanish fleet sent against England in 1588, defeated by English resistance, weather, and logistical failures. English accounts of the failed invasion reinforced hostile images of Spain.
