Black identity : A personal or collective sense of belonging to Black people and communities. It describes how people understand and define Blackness beyond ancestry alone.
Racism : A system of beliefs, practices, or institutions that produces unequal treatment based on racial categories. Anti-Black racism has shaped laws, institutions, and everyday life across societies.
African Americans : A US ethnic group with ancestry among the populations of sub-Saharan Africa brought to the Americas, chiefly through slavery. Their history illustrates one distinct Black identity shaped by US institutions and culture.
Race : A social classification system that groups people using perceived physical traits and ancestry. Blackness is one racial identity shaped by broader systems of classification.
Frederick Douglass : An American abolitionist, writer, and orator who escaped slavery and became a leading advocate for emancipation and civil rights. His life and arguments made Black resistance to slavery central to public debate.
African diaspora : The worldwide communities descended from people dispersed from Africa, especially through enslavement and migration. It connects Black populations across regions while recognizing distinct local histories.
Atlantic slave trade : The forced trafficking of millions of Africans across the Atlantic from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries. It created diasporic populations and institutions whose effects persist across generations.
Black British people : People of African or Caribbean heritage who identify as Black and are British. Their identities reflect Britain’s distinct histories of migration, empire, and race.
Ethnicity : A form of group identity connected to shared ancestry, history, culture, language, or tradition. It overlaps with Black identity but can describe affiliations not defined by race.
W. E. B. Du Bois : An American sociologist, historian, and civil rights activist who helped found the NAACP. His scholarship and activism shaped analyses of Black life and racial inequality.
