Blackbirding

Blackbirding was the coercive recruitment and kidnapping of Pacific Islanders for labor, especially on plantations, during the nineteenth century. It linked labor trafficking to colonial economies across the Pacific.

Indentured labor: A labor arrangement in which a person works for a fixed period under a contract, often to repay a debt or passage. Blackbirders used purported contracts to disguise coercion and bind many Pacific Islanders to plantation work.
Queensland sugar industry: The cultivation and processing of sugarcane in Queensland, which expanded rapidly during the nineteenth century. Sugar plantations created sustained demand for Pacific labor and helped drive recruitment voyages.
Rabaul Islanders: Indigenous communities of the Gazelle Peninsula and nearby islands in what is now Papua New Guinea. Communities from the region were among those targeted by labor recruiters across the southwest Pacific.
Pacific diaspora in Australia: Communities of Pacific Islander descent living in Australia, including descendants of nineteenth-century laborers. Some descendants of blackbirded laborers remained in Australia after deportation policies began.
Recruitment of Pacific Islanders in Queensland: The movement of Pacific Islanders to Queensland, Australia, for plantation labor, especially from the 1860s to 1904. Queensland's labor trade became one of the largest and most contested forms of blackbirding.
Fiji cotton industry: The nineteenth-century cultivation of cotton in Fiji, expanded during the American Civil War cotton shortage. Cotton estates in Fiji employed Pacific Islanders brought through labor recruitment networks.
William T. Pritchard: A British consul and missionary who reported on labor recruitment and colonial affairs in the Pacific. His accounts contributed to contemporary scrutiny of recruitment practices in the Pacific.
Australian South Sea Islanders: A distinct Australian community descended mainly from Pacific Islanders brought to Queensland for labor in the nineteenth century. Their community preserves the history and continuing consequences of the Queensland labor trade.
Kanaka trade: The nineteenth-century labor trade that brought Pacific Islanders, called Kanakas, to plantations in Australia and elsewhere. This name was widely used for the Pacific labor trade that blackbirding supplied.
