Blasting cap

A small detonator that initiates a larger explosive charge. It converts an electrical, mechanical, or pyrotechnic trigger into a shock sufficient to set off a less sensitive main explosive.

Detonator: A device that initiates an explosive reaction in another charge. Blasting cap is a common type of detonator.
Blasting machine: A portable device designed to deliver an electrical firing pulse to a blasting circuit. It can provide the electrical trigger for an electric cap.
Blasting: The controlled use of explosives to break rock, demolish structures, or perform other work. Caps initiate the main charges used in many blasting operations.
Percussion cap: A small primer ignited by impact, historically used to fire firearms and other devices. Despite the similar name, it is primarily a firearm primer, not a blasting detonator.

Mining: The extraction of minerals and other geological materials from the Earth. Explosives initiated by caps are used to fragment rock in some mining methods.
Impact fuze: A device that initiates a munition's explosive payload when it strikes a target. It initiates a munition on impact, rather than serving as a separate cap for a blasting charge.
Secondary explosive: An explosive that is comparatively insensitive to ordinary shock or heat and requires a strong initiating impulse. The cap supplies the impulse needed to detonate the main charge.
Blasting agent: A bulk explosive mixture used as a main charge, generally requiring a separate initiating charge. It is a common kind of larger charge that a cap may initiate.
