Combined arms : The coordinated use of different military branches or weapons to achieve effects greater than any one could alone. Blitzkrieg depended on synchronizing armor, infantry, artillery, and air power.
German rearmament : Germany’s military expansion after Adolf Hitler took power in 1933, in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. Rearmament supplied the modern aircraft and armored forces used in early campaigns.
Operation Barbarossa : Nazi Germany’s 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union, the largest land invasion in history. Initial advances were rapid, but the campaign exposed the limits of speed across vast distances.
Attrition warfare : A strategy that seeks victory by exhausting an opponent’s personnel, equipment, or resources. Blitzkrieg aimed to cause rapid operational collapse rather than win through prolonged exhaustion.
