Bloomsbury Group

The Bloomsbury Group was an informal circle of British writers, artists, and intellectuals active in and around London’s Bloomsbury district from the early twentieth century. Its members challenged Victorian conventions and shaped modern literature, art, and thought.

Virginia Woolf: An English modernist writer whose novels and essays include Mrs Dalloway and A Room of One’s Own. Her writing and publishing helped define the group’s literary legacy.
Gordon Square: A garden square in Bloomsbury, London, surrounded by Georgian townhouses. The Stephen family’s home at 46 Gordon Square became an early meeting place for the circle.
Post-Impressionism: A diverse movement in late nineteenth-century art that extended and reacted against Impressionism. Its formal experiments influenced the visual work of Bell and Grant.
Victorian era: The period of Queen Victoria’s reign in Britain, from 1837 to 1901. Bloomsbury writers and artists challenged inherited Victorian ideals of propriety and authority.
Lytton Strachey: An English biographer and critic known for Eminent Victorians and an irreverent approach to biography. His satirical history challenged the reverence for Victorian public figures that the group rejected.
King's College, Cambridge: A constituent college of the University of Cambridge, founded in 1441. Cambridge friendships brought several future members into the same intellectual circle.
Modernism: A broad movement that rejected established forms and conventions in art, literature, and thought. The group’s experiments formed part of British modernism’s wider break with tradition.
Edwardian era: The period of Edward VII’s reign in Britain, from 1901 to 1910. The circle emerged amid social change that unsettled Edwardian class and gender conventions.
John Maynard Keynes: A British economist whose work transformed economic theory and public policy. His economic influence grew alongside friendships formed within the Bloomsbury circle.
Thoby Stephen: An English student whose Cambridge friendships helped bring the early Bloomsbury circle together. His gatherings connected university friends with his sisters’ London home.
