Blowback

Blowback is the unintended harmful consequences that return to affect a state after its covert actions or foreign policies produce reactions abroad.

Unintended consequences: Outcomes of an action that were not intended by those who took it. Blowback is a politically consequential form of unintended consequence.
Operation Cyclone: The CIA program that supplied and financed Afghan mujahideen during the Soviet–Afghan War. Its support for armed groups is often discussed in accounts of later militant threats.
Chalmers Johnson: An American political scientist and author known for analyzing U.S. foreign policy and militarism. Johnson helped popularize blowback as a framework for understanding the consequences of U.S. interventions.
Anti-Americanism: Opposition or hostility toward the United States, its government, or its influence. Perceived foreign intervention can fuel enduring hostility toward the United States.
False flag: An operation made to appear as though it was conducted by someone other than its actual perpetrators. Deception can obscure responsibility while creating reactions that later rebound on the sponsor.
Iranian Revolution: The 1979 revolution that overthrew Iran's monarchy and established an Islamic republic. U.S. support for the Shah became part of the grievances shaping Iran's post-revolutionary hostility.
Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire: A 2000 book by Chalmers Johnson examining unintended consequences of U.S. foreign policy. The book brought the term to a broad public audience.
Terrorism: The use or threat of violence against civilians to pursue political aims. Some blowback debates concern violent attacks attributed to grievances over foreign policy.
Proxy war: A conflict in which outside powers support local forces rather than fight each other directly. Supporting armed proxies can create independent actors whose later actions harm their patrons.
1953 Iranian coup d'état: The overthrow of Iranian prime minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in a coup backed by the United States and Britain. The coup became a lasting source of Iranian resentment toward the United States.
