Blue Nile

The Blue Nile is the Nile’s major southeastern tributary, rising at Lake Tana in Ethiopia and joining the White Nile at Khartoum, Sudan.

Lake Tana: Lake Tana is Ethiopia’s largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile. The Blue Nile begins at this highland lake.
Abay River: Abay is the Amharic name for the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. This local name identifies the same river within Ethiopia.
Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam: The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is a large hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. It is the river’s most consequential modern infrastructure project.
White Nile: The White Nile is the Nile’s other principal tributary, flowing north from the Great Lakes region through South Sudan. It supplies steadier flow, unlike the Blue Nile’s pronounced wet-season surge.
Blue Nile Falls: Blue Nile Falls is a major waterfall on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. The river drops over this escarpment shortly after leaving Lake Tana.
James Bruce: James Bruce was a Scottish traveler who explored the Blue Nile’s Lake Tana source region in the eighteenth century. His account publicized the river’s source to European audiences.
Roseires Dam: Roseires Dam is a hydroelectric and irrigation dam on the Blue Nile in Sudan. It regulates Blue Nile water before it enters Sudan’s agricultural heartland.
Atbara River: The Atbara River is a Nile tributary that rises in the Ethiopian Highlands and joins the main Nile in Sudan. It is another seasonal Ethiopian tributary, smaller than the Blue Nile.
Nile flood: The Nile flood is the annual rise in river flow, historically driven largely by seasonal rains in the Ethiopian Highlands. Blue Nile floods carry much of the Nile’s annual peak flow.
Ptolemy: Ptolemy was a Greek-speaking geographer and astronomer of the second century CE. His writings preserved ancient speculation about the Nile’s sources.
