Body count

A tally of enemy casualties used as a measure of military progress, especially during the Vietnam War. Its use as a success metric became controversial because deaths were difficult to verify and did not reliably indicate strategic gains.

Kill ratio: A military measure comparing enemy losses with friendly losses. Body counts were often interpreted alongside friendly casualties to assess battlefield advantage.
Vietnam War: A prolonged conflict from 1955 to 1975 involving North and South Vietnam, the United States, and other forces. The term became especially associated with American measures of progress in this conflict.

Free-fire zone: An area designated by military command in which forces could attack targets without first confirming hostile presence. Attacks in these zones could produce disputed classifications of civilian deaths as enemy casualties.
Systems analysis: A method for evaluating complex problems by examining measurable components and their relationships. Its influence encouraged officials to treat casualty counts as data for judging military performance.
