Body horror

Body horror is a horror mode centered on bodily transformation, violation, or loss of control. It makes the body itself a source of fear, often through mutation, disease, injury, or altered identity.

Body autonomy: The right and capacity to make decisions about one's own body. Violations of bodily choice turn transformation into a threat to personal control.
The Fly (1986 film): David Cronenberg's science-fiction horror film about a scientist gradually merging with a housefly. Its staged deterioration makes transformation both a physical process and a personal tragedy.
Frankenstein: Mary Shelley's 1818 novel about a scientist who creates a living being from assembled body parts. Its constructed body makes bodily integrity and responsibility central sources of horror.
Psychological horror: Horror that creates fear through mental states, perceptions, or emotional conflict. It locates terror primarily in the mind, while body horror makes physical change central.
Medical ethics: The study of moral questions raised by medical practice, research, and health policy. Stories of invasive treatment and experimentation dramatize conflicts over consent and care.
Body schema: The largely unconscious sense of the body's shape, position, and capabilities. Distorted body maps make familiar anatomy feel alien or unreliable.
The Thing (1982 film): John Carpenter's horror film about an alien organism that imitates and assimilates other life-forms. Its imitations turn bodily identity and trusted appearances into sources of terror.
The Island of Doctor Moreau: H. G. Wells's 1896 novel about an island where a scientist surgically transforms animals into humanlike beings. Its experiments make the boundary between human and animal physically unstable.
Cosmic horror: Horror built around humanity's insignificance before vast, incomprehensible forces. Its focus is existential scale; bodily mutation may appear, but is not its defining concern.
Transhumanism: An intellectual movement advocating the use of technology to enhance human capacities and overcome biological limits. Body horror often imagines enhancement as a route to unintended mutation or diminished control.
